Lessons: Pain and rehabilitation |
Pain and Able specialises in teaching adults who need to swim to help manage chronic pain, especially back pain |
While the swimming teaching in these lessons is similar to that in other lessons, the following factors are given particular consideration: Careful attention is paid to professional advice the swimmer has had in relation to any injury or condition. Before deciding which stroke to begin with, aspects of strokes may be explored and explained. Strokes are specially adapted to minimise strain on joints. Strokes are taught through clear steps which are progessively more challenging. The clarity and gentleness of these can be helpful to a person who may be anxious about moving. We consider together how to pace swimming lessons and practice sessions so as to increase the level of activity while minimising the chance of flare-ups. Subsequent lessons allow time to report back on practice sessions and on changes in level of pain. |
When I was spending a lot of time and money on treatments from experts, I got a great boost from discovering something which I could do for myself which was clearly beneficial. (Daphne Wood on learning the Shaw Method of Swimming) |
