Lessons for efficiency and enjoyment |
Pain and Able teaches fit healthy adults who wish to improve their technique |
Some are puzzled to find they are able to run, cycle or do several circuits in the gym and yet unable to swim more than a couple of lengths without feeling tired or out of breath. |
Underpinning this work is the assumption that greater enjoyment and improved technique are possible at any age. |
Lessons usually begin with a Pain and Able swim assessment. This often includes video analysis. This assessment pays attention both to the traditional factors monitored by swimming teachers: body position, leg action, arm action, breathing and timing and also to several other important factors: eg the relationship between the head and neck and back; the degree of effort being used; Does the person alternate between effort and release? How do they understand the stroke they are swimming? After offering feedback, lessons proceed with a mixture of explanation, demonstration and verbal guidance. Lessons start from where the person is and explore issues like doing less and using the water's properties. For example, not holding the head on the water or out of the water, but allowing the water to support its weight. As we focus on working with water and making small manageable changes, enjoyment in the process usually develop spontaneously. |
